Adjustable Bed Buying Guide: Compatibility, Features & Delivery

An adjustable base should fit your mattress, room, routine, and delivery plan—not just a feature checklist. Use this guide to narrow the choices, then confirm the product-specific shipping, setup, warranty, and return terms before checkout.

Start with these five decisions

  1. Mattress compatibility: Confirm that your mattress manufacturer permits use on an adjustable base. Flexible foam and many hybrid mattresses may be compatible, but construction and warranty terms vary.
  2. Size and split configuration: Match the base to the mattress size. For independent movement, confirm whether you need a Split King, Split California King, or another split configuration—and whether each side requires its own mattress.
  3. Room and frame fit: Measure the sleeping area, doorway, hallway, stair turns, and outlet location. If you plan to place the base inside an existing frame or on a platform, verify zero-clearance compatibility and required support.
  4. Supported load: Compare the manufacturer's stated capacity with the combined weight of the mattress, sleepers, bedding, and anything else placed on the base.
  5. Controls you will use: Decide whether independent head and foot movement is enough, or whether you want saved positions, head tilt, lumbar adjustment, massage, app control, underbed lighting, or USB charging.

What “zero clearance” does—and does not—answer

A zero-clearance base may be designed to sit on a compatible platform, foundation, slat system, or the floor without its standard legs. It does not guarantee that every decorative bed frame, storage bed, headboard, or foundation will work. Check interior dimensions, structural support, moving clearance, retainer-bar clearance, and any required brackets or adapters.

Plan delivery before you buy

  • Delivery type: Ask whether the order ships by parcel, curbside freight, threshold, room-of-choice, or another service level.
  • Customer responsibility: Confirm unloading, moving indoors, stair carry, packaging removal, assembly, and old-base disposal.
  • Access: Measure the full route from the truck to the room, including gates, elevators, landings, and tight turns.
  • Timing: Processing and transit estimates are supplier-specific. Do not schedule installers or dispose of your current bed until the delivery appointment is confirmed.
  • Inspection: Inspect freight and packaging at delivery, note visible damage on the delivery record, photograph it, and report issues within the supplier's stated window.

Check warranty and returns by model

Adjustable-base warranties can treat the frame, motors, electronics, remote, labor, transportation, and replacement parts differently. Confirm the warranty duration, who administers claims, what costs remain yours, and whether registration is required. Also confirm return eligibility before purchase: some bases may be final sale, and an applicable restocking fee or return-freight cost can be substantial.

Questions to answer before checkout

  • Is my exact mattress model approved for an adjustable base?
  • Does the selected base size match my mattress and bed frame?
  • Will the base operate safely within my existing frame or platform?
  • What is included—legs, retainer bar, remote, brackets, and power components?
  • What delivery service is included, and who unloads and assembles it?
  • What is the damage-reporting deadline?
  • Who administers the warranty, and what labor or transportation is excluded?
  • Is the selected item returnable, final sale, or subject to a restocking fee?

Adjustable bed FAQ

Can I use my existing mattress?

Possibly. Confirm compatibility with the mattress manufacturer and review its warranty. A mattress that fits the base dimensions can still be unsuitable if it is not flexible enough to move repeatedly.

Do I need a Split King?

A split configuration lets each side move independently. Confirm the mattress arrangement, synchronization options, fitted-sheet plan, and whether the order includes one base or both halves.

Can I place an adjustable base inside my current bed frame?

Some bases are designed for zero-clearance use, but fit depends on the exact frame, support structure, and base model. Measure first and confirm the product instructions.

Who assembles the base?

That depends on the selected product and delivery service. Freight or curbside delivery should not be assumed to include indoor placement or assembly.
